KIU ranked No.1 private & 3rd best University in Uganda

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities of July 2020, has once again ranked Kampala International University the leading private University in East Africa in its latest World University rankings and overall third-best University in Uganda.

It is also the 58th highest ranked University in Africa out of more than 2,000 Universities.

Kampala International University moves up one place from 4th in Uganda and 1,343 places from 4,719th to 3,376th out of 30,000 Higher Institutions of Learning in the world since the last rankings made in January 2020.

The Webometrics rank of a University is heavily influenced by the volume, quality and impact of content it publishes on the web.

Victoria University

The Vice-Chancellor for Kampala International University, Dr Mouhamad Mpezamihigo hailed this milestone.

“I take this opportunity to congratulate the KIU fraternity on this great achievement. Going up in the rankings is a result of a joint effort and contribution by the KIU Board of Trustees, University Council, University management, staff, students, and all our stakeholders and well-wishers,” Dr Mpezamihigo said.

“Even in these challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has continued to rise in rankings. This meritorious achievement is a combination of hardwork and special sacrifices by all. I register special thanks to the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr. Al-Hajj Hassan Basajjabalaba, for investing heavily in infrastructure and improvements in work and study environments of the University,” he added.

Dr Mpezamihigo noted that the University team is highly motivated to work even harder and attain the main target of being the University of choice and a leading beacon in the African and world academic sphere.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for KIU Western Campus, Prof Patrick Kyamanywa said “Kampala international university is continuing to live up to its motto, ‘Exploring the heights’, and has witnessed tremendous growth and transformation in the last 5 years, coming from 8th to 3rd ranking University in Uganda and among the top 100 universities on the African continent.”

“I congratulate the leadership and the entire KIU community on this great achievement. This high ranking is testament to the efforts and commitment to offering high-quality education and training to our students and being relevant and accountable to the community,” he added.

He also said that this was a great way to welcome the new Chancellor for KIU, Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, under his tenure, the University and expects greater transformation taking advantage of the rich global influence and experience he brings with him to the University.”

Prof Mamdani is a proven and reputable academic and research fellow, and his entry into the KIU academic fold is considered a major landmark that in intellectual circles not only in Uganda but also in the region.

Kampala International University continues to fly the academic flag for Uganda, with the East Africa Community Medical Boards and Councils recently recognizing the KIU Teaching Hospital School of Health Sciences as the only school in Uganda licenced to admit, and train dental graduates.

The KIU Teaching Hospital, also the only of its kind as a University owned Teaching hospital, has contributed immensely in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, with its COVID-19 emergency center being approved by the Ministry of Health as being qualified to treat COVID-19 patients.

The KIU teaching hospital is ranked among the 10 best general hospitals out over 132 in Uganda.

On another front, in March 2020, KIU rolled out its e-learning platform as soon as the closure of educational institutions was announced by H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Majority of students at the university have continued with their studies and assignments which are provided by the university lecturers according schedule via the learning Management System.

In order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, the delayed 22nd Graduation Ceremony, earlier scheduled in June 2020, has now been rescheduled to take place on Saturday 22nd August 2020.

It will be conducted entirely online, the first virtual graduation in the history of the University.
