Court orders CMI to produce writer Kakwenza


Chapter Four Uganda activists working together with Counsel Eron Kiiza, has secured a writ of habeas corpus for writer Kakwenza Rukira-Bashaija who has been in detention for seven days now.

He was arrested on April 13, 2020 apparently over his book, the “Greedy Barbarians”.

High Court has ordered the Attorney General, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), and the Director of Chieftancy of Military Intelligence (CMI) to ensure that the body of Kakwenza Rukira is produced before court on April 27, 2020 for appropriate orders.

“We are very concerned about his continued illegal detention,” the activists said.

“We urge the Attorney General and IGP to ensure that he is immediately freed and that the security forces desist from such actions that violate the fundamental right to personal liberty.”
