Cabinet sat on Monday February 10, 2020 at State House, Entebbe, and noted the update on the invasion of Locusts in the Karamoja Region and Government’s interventions being undertaken to combat the invasion.
Byantwale Tibeijuka Stephen who is the current Commissioner at the Department of Crop Protection said locusts have a migratory characteristic.
“When they leave a place, you may not know the swarms were there but only see their destruction for instance in Amudat district,” he told press at Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday.
He said the Desert Locusts that have been ravaging Ethiopia, Somali, Eritrea, Sudan and finally Kenya have further spread into the Karamoja region through Amudat District through Kiwawa and Alela in Kenya.
By 4:00pm on 9th February, 2020, they had further spread into Archerere Village (Morita Parish) along Moroto, Nakapiripirit road crossing into Nabilatuk district.
On receipt of the report about the desert locust invasion into the country RT Hon Prime Minister convened an emergency meeting on 9th February, 2020 at 7:00pm to collaborate efforts.
UPDF standby Force of 2000 men/women were already undergoing training and capacity building, training on management of locusts for 17 districts neighbouring Kenya and Sudan has been organized at Moroto to take place tomorrow, Wednesday.
