The military have arrested opposition figure, Kizza Besigye, in Jinja town Eastern Uganda.
His aide, Ronald Muhinda, says Besigye was “kidnapped by Police and Army and taken to notorious Nalufenya detention facility”.
Besigye was arrested after hours of running battles between FDC supporters and Police Bugembe to Jinja town.
“The people fought back Police aggression, brutality, harassment and intimidation,” Muhinda said.
He said police who were previously overwhelmed after using teargas and bullets, called in the army for reinforcement from Ghaddafi barracks to fully subdue the people.
Besigye had gone to Jinja to celebrate the 15th anniversary since founding of FDC as part of simultaneous celebrations in various districts of Eastern Uganda.
Police used the army truck to tow Besigye’s vehicle with him inside it up to Nalufenya where he was detained.
The force spent Monday arresting and confiscating events materials in Mbale, Buikwe and Busia towns.
