Uganda mourns human rights defender Kaggwa

The government of Uganda is mourning the passing of  Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairman Med Kaggwa who passed on Wednesday morning.

“It’s with deep sorrow that we’ve learnt of the death of Mr Meddie Kaggwa, Chairperson of UHRC. Our condolences go to his family and friends in this trying moment. May his soul Rest In Peace!,” said government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo.

Hon Dr Med Kaggwa was a Member of the CA from 1994-95 and Minister for Presidency from 1996-2001.

He was a Member of Parliament representing Kawempe South.


He was an MP East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) from 2001-2011 & Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission from 2008-2019 & a Lawyer.

Meanwhile, Parliament also observed a moment of silence in honour of the late Hon Med Kaggwa who collapsed this morning on his way to work.

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga said Hon Kaggwa served Uganda in distinguished capacities.

“On my own behalf and that of the Parliamentary Commission, I convey our sincere condolences to the family of the late Hon Kaggwa, relatives, friends and the country at large on this loss,” said Kadaga while presiding over plenary.
