Speaker Rebecca Kadaga says she was shocked to learn that 85% of government-owned health facilities lack latrines and proper sanitation.
The statistic has been revealed during a Uganda Parliamentary Symposium on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; attended by many stakeholders.
While opening the first ever parliamentary symposium on Water and Sanitation, Kadaga called on Ministry of Health to close all government health facilities without latrines.
“I have been shocked and saddened to learn that 85% of government-owned health facilities lack latrines and proper sanitation,” Kadaga said after the symposium.
She added: “They should be shut down. They are causing and spreading more diseases than curing them!”
Last year, parliament laboured to increase the national budget for water and sanitation.
Unfortunately, it was vetoed by the Finance ministry.
“We shall continue the struggle,” said Kadaga.
