Machar flies to Uganda to meet Kiir

Machar and his team headed to Uganda

South Sudan opposition leader H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, Thursday morning left Khartoum for Kampala.

Cde. Puok Both Baluang, SPLM (IO) Director for Information and Public Relations, said Machar left at 7:00am.

The Commander in Chief of the people’s movement SPLM/SPLA (IO), and designated First Vice President is accompanied by H.E. 1st Lt. General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, Chairperson of the Sudan’s Sovereign Council.

He is on a one-day visit to attend the 3rd face-to-face meeting with President Salva Kiir in the presence of Revitalized Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) guarantors.

The meeting aims at discussing the critical outstanding issues of the R-ARCSS and chart away forward as the extended pre-pransitional period draws to a close without much having been achieved.

The South Sudan presidency confirmed that President Salva Kiir Mayardit will attend a meeting to be held in Kampala, Uganda.

Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar will meet in the presence of the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and the president of the Sudanese Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah Al Burhan.

The meeting was supposed to take place Tuesday but was delayed.

The meeting, which will be the third face-to-face meeting between the two principal leaders, is expected to discuss outstanding issues in the implementation of the peace agreement before the expected formation of a transitional government on November 12.

The key outstanding issues include the creation of unified forces, deployment of soldiers meant to protect top government officials, agreeing on the number of states and drawing internal boundaries.
