Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Wafula Oguttu has accused President Museveni’s government of allegedly planning to assassinate opposition figure Kizza Besigye.
Oguttu was commenting on the brutal arrest of Besigye on Monday that saw police use a water canon that threw the politician off balance and nearly suffocated him.
“So the junta hardliners had planned to kill Dr Besigye, the People’s President, using highly pressurised water canon?” Oguttu pointed out.
“Thank God they failed. Their end is drawing close.”
On Tuesday morning, he wrote on social media: “From what we saw yesterday at Namboole, Kireka and Nakawa done to FDC members, it is easy to understand how dictatorships force citizens into “terrorists”.”
Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] party also said on its social media pages that the scene was evidence that deputy IGP Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Muzeyi’s instructions to Uganda Police officers is to kill unarmed Ugandans.
“They targeted Dr. Kizza Besigye and intentionally aimed to kill him. By the Grace of God, he is still alive…”
The party said Besigye’s car was extremely spoilt at Spear Motors and all wind glasses removed.
Police later charged him with inciting violence and holding an illegal assembly before releasing him from custody.
He was taken into custody with his driver Fred Kato and a one Mwesigye Benson at Naggalama police station in Mukono.
FDC legislators Francis Mwijukye and Roland Mugume secured his release.
“I was released from Naggalama Police cells at about 10pm last night. By God’s Grace, I am generally fine. Am grateful for the many msgs of concern &prayers,” Besigye said.
He added: “Gross abuse of Human Rights (by NRM/M7 junta) with impunity has gone on for too long. We must all unite in saying: ENOUGH!”
Police said Besigye defied Police orders and parked his vehicle in the middle of the road, blocking and inconveniencing other road users.
