UWA ranger shoots dead ‘poacher’ in Bwindi


A Park Ranger in Kisoro district has shot and killed a suspected poacher in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The incident happened Sunday at around 6pm in Rubuguri town council, according to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate.

Maate identified the deceased as Aloyise Kakuru, 28, a resident of Nteko village, Nyabwishenya Sub County in Kisoro District.

He said the deceased was in the company of two others at Ivi water stream in Bwindi impenetrable national park before he was killed.

One of the suspected poachers, John Kaheru, was arrested and is currently in police custody at Kisoro police station. The others escaped.

He said the scene of crime was immediately secured by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and UPDF personnel that disarmed the suspected killer game ranger.

In September, UWA ranger shot and killed one Kenneth Akampurira, a resident of Rushaya cell in Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri District.

The deceased was suspected of being involved in illegal fishing activities along River Ntungwa in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
