Uganda’s Ezekiel, Esther win East Africa Got Talent

Ugandan duo Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira have won the East African Got Talent championship held in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

The 10-week journey came to its close on Sunday.

Out of the six acts on the finals, Uganda had three groups, Kenya had two groups and Rwanda had one group which gave Uganda a higher chance of taking it home.

Esther and Ezekiel floored fellow Ugandans DNA dance group, Jehovah Shallom Akapella, Kenya’s group Spell cast, 8 year old Janelle Tamala and Rwanda’s Intayoberana who came second.

Brother and sister brought home a grand prize of $50,000 [about Shs180m].

Both children of gospel musician Julie Mutesasira and Pastor Steven Mutesasira, the siblings performed a Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey hit during the final round of the competition.

Ezekiel, 11, is in Primary Four at Hormisdallen School, Kamwokya. In 2017, Ezekiel emerged winner at Uganda Has Got Talent competitions at Club Obligato.

He won a trip to USA and performed at Uganda North American Association (UNAA) convention.

East Africa’s Got Talent is a talent show competition that is part of the Got Talent franchise owned by Simon Cowell.

Season one was produced by South African film production company Rapid Blue, and was broadcast simultaneously across four countries in East Africa; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.

The programme showcases a variety of talents from people of all ages from East Africa, with acts ranging from singing, dancing, comedy, magic, juggling, stunts and other variety genres.

The competition was judged by; Jeff Koinange a Kenyan TV show host at Citizen TV, former Big Brother Africa contestant and 91.3 Capital FM presenter Gaetano Kagwa from Uganda, Tanzanian singer-songwriter Vanessa Mdee and DJ Contact Makeda from Rwanda.
