The Hoima by-election campaign has united all pro-liberation leaders and forces in support of Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] candidate Ms Asinasi Nyakato.
According to the party, Nyakato’s only challenger is the NRM (Junta) candidate Harriet Businge Mugenyi.
The election has united FDC, Democratic Party (DP) represented by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) represented by its national coordinator Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu and People Power Movement of MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
The election is due on September 26. The MP seat fell vacant after Tophace Kaahwa Byagira (NRM) chose to represent the newly created Kikuube District that was carved out of Hoima in July 2018.
On Saturday, FDC President Patrick Amuriat and opposition figure Kizza Besigye were joined by Lukwago, Muntu and Bobi Wine in Hoima to campaign for the FDC candidate.
After her nomination last week, Barnabas Tinkasimiire, the People Power regional coordinator and Jackson Wabyona, the ANT western region coordinator, threw their weight behind Nyakato.
Yesterday, her rally begun with prayers at SDA Church in Hoima during their ongoing Annual Camp meeting.
Besigye said they got encouragement, prayers and wonderful messages about leadership from Pastor Charles Nyamwega visiting from Kenya.
“Thanks Hoima for the promise of a new Uganda! Till very late, Hoima people were very charged. Keep it up. No turning back!” he noted.
FDC Party Vice Chairman and also Rukungiri Municipality MP Hon. Kaginda Rolland Mugume and Parliamentary commissioner also Buhweju County MP Hon. Francis Mwijukye also joined in a door to door, village to village campaign in a bid to secure victory in the oil city of Bunyoro.
Nyakato is now the official joint opposition candidate with all forces of change in support of her candidature.
Who is Nyakato?
Nyakato is a princess of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
Ms Nyakato contested for the Hoima Woman MP seat in 2011 but lost to Ms Tophas Kaahwa Byagira.
From August 2011 up to 2016, she worked with Parliament as a policy analyst.
In 2016, she returned to Hoima to advocate the rights of communities affected by oil and gas developments in the Albertine Grabben.
She is a member of the FDC National Executive where she serves as secretary for health services.
She is also the FDC general secretary for Hoima Municipality.
Nyakato previously served as secretary for environment in the FDC youth league.
Who is Businge?
Businge holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education.
She is the proprietor of Good Samaritan Community School in Hoima Town, which offers bursaries to needy children.
She served as education minister in Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom for about 10 years and initiated a project to kick start the Bunyoro Kitara Royal University.
Businge also chaired the Kabalega Education Fund that was founded by the Omukama of Bunyoro to offer education opportunities to his needy students.
She retired from kingdom service in 2015 to join active politics.
Businge also stood for the Hoima Woman MP seat in 2016 and lost to Ms Tophas Kaahwa Byagira.
In 2018, she was appointed RDC Sembabule but declined the offer, saying she wanted to try her luck in parliamentary politics.
