Namibia’s Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of International Relations and Cooperation paid an official visit to Uganda with a delegation of 11 persons.
Uganda’s Ambassador accredited to Namibia, Amb. Barbara Nekesa accompanied the Foreign Minister to Uganda.
Hon. Netumbo who also serves as the Vice President of the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) focused her discussion on enhancing the bilateral relations between Uganda and Namibia during her four (4) day visit where she met with H.E the President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Sam Kutesa and the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Hon. Amelia Anne Kyambadde.
Uganda and Namibia have enjoyed cordial relations since the early 1990s and the Republic of Namibia is an economy with a 2.5 million population, GDP Growth Rate averaged at 1.19 percent from 2004 until 2019 and member of the Southern Africa Development Community and Southern Africa Customs Union.
Upon arrival, Hon. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah immediately held a meeting with the Ministry of Trade Industry and cooperatives Uganda-MTIC, to discuss the available opportunities in Trade and investment where and can cooperate.
It was agreed that Uganda prepares an MOU on Trade and presents it to the counterparts for consideration with calls to strengthen trade relations through the various regional trade blocs and at individual country level.
She later visited PAWO offices in Bukoto to assess the progress of this Pan African Women Organization.
On Friday 10th August 2019, Hon. Netumbo held a meeting with her counterpart, MFA Hon. Sam Kutesa at Ministry HQ.
The two principals agreed during this meeting to operationalise and launch the Joint Permanent Commission between the two countries which had earlier been signed between Former President Sam Nujoma and President Museveni.
She then paid a courtesy call on Office of the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda before travelling to meet with H.E. the President.
Hon. Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah visited President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at his farm in Kisozi, Gomba district and during this meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister conveyed special greetings from President Dr. Hage Geingob of the Republic of Namibia.
The principals also discussed issues pertaining to the diplomatic relations between Uganda and Namibia, Pan Africanism, Trade agreements between the two nations, Ratifying and operationalising the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA) and the upcoming SADC conference to be held in Tanzania where Namibia shall be handing over the SADC chairpersonship to Tanzania.
