Bright Okpocha, better known by his stage name Basketmouth is a Nigerian comedian and actor is in Kampala for the Comedy Store Show tomorrow, Thursday at UMA grounds in Lugogo.
Basketmouth who arrived in the country on Tuesday night is accompanied by another Nigerian comedian Onyebuchi Ojieh, known by his stage name Buchi.
Buchi is also a composer, writer, and actor from Delta State, Nigeria.
Buchi began his comedy career in 2008, after he was introduced to comedian Tee-A, who invited Buchi to his show Tee-A Live N Naked Show in Lagos.
This led to meetings with other comedians, such as Ali Baba and Opa Williams, who gave Buchi a spot on his Nite of A 1000 Laughs show.
Buchi has performed alongside other comedians, such as I Go Dye, I Go Save, Basketmouth, and Bovi, among others.
“It is wonderful being in Uganda,” Buchi told press at Mestil hotel in Nsambya on Wednesday afternoon.
He called Ugandans people of great energy and said his return to the country was history in the making.
Buchi, according to Basketmouth, will also perform on stage tomorrow at UMA showgrounds.
The main act of the evening Basketmouth said he has been in Uganda for the 20th time but this is his first time at Comedy Store Uganda, headed by Alex Muhangi.
“It’s my job to make people laugh and I have been working on good material to that effect,” Basketmouth told journalists.
“Comedy has always been part of my life since primary school and secondary days.”
Basketmouth who studied anthropology at the University of Benin started out as a musician but had to abandon his early music career to pursue comedy having rapped with groups like “Pyschophats” and “Da Oddz”.
He didn’t choose to be a comedian but comedy chose him.
“I enjoy making people laugh and I don’t intend to retire from comedy,” he noted.
Basketmouth who was last in Uganda in 2018 said: “I enjoy doing gigs in Uganda because you guys love to laugh. I also love your great women, I mean, great food.”
Asked what he would choose if told to pick from being Basketmouth and Ugandan women, he said Ugandan women won’t pay him money but he would instead be spending on them.
The founder of Comedy Store, Muhangi, said gates will open at 6pm. A jazz band will be playing at 8pm after which comedy featuring Basketmouth will kick off.
Muhangi called Basketmouth the biggest stand-up comedian in Africa saying Comedy Store is yet to arrive.
Tickets for the show go for Shs40,000; Shs100,000 and a table at Shs500,000.
Musicians like John Blaq, Ray G and Spice Diana and comedians like MC Mariachi, Madrat & Chiko, Maulana & Reign, Bizonto, Taata Sam, Senga Justine Nantume etc will grace the show.
Sheila, Mestil hotel Senior Sales & Marketing Executive, said the hotel’s partnership with Comedy Store was already bearing positive fruits.
“The footprint and mileage is great,” Sheila said, inviting Basketmouth to stay longer at the residences.
“I was hoping that we could keep you longer,” she noted, to which Basketmouth nodding with positive energy.
