President Museveni has written to Investment minister Evelyn Anite giving her a greenlight to edit Uganda Telecom Limited.
In a letter dated July 16, Museveni writes: “This is to direct you to institute an audit in the activities that are going on in Uganda Telecommunication Limited.”
He adds: “I have heard of some allegations. The audit show clear them or confirm them.”
Anite had written to the president complaining about deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana for ignoring her directives.
Anite had ordered Rukutana to sack UTL administrator Bemanya Twebaze which he refused.
Even AG William Byaruhanga wrote to Anite telling her she has no mandate to sack Bemanya.
While everyone was waiting for Museveni to pick a side, the president at the start of the month wrote to Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Kahinda Otafiire.
In a letter dated July 3, Museveni emphasizes the importance of UTL to government.
He says government has been in the process of identifying an investor to partner with to revamp UTL as opposed to divesting it.
“The above position was taken by cabinet. Therefore no actions contrary to cabinet’s position should be taken, ” Museveni wrote.
He added: “Further, cabinet must always be consulted on any investment or related decisions concerning UTL before they are taken.”
