The Uganda national army [UPDF] on Monday started the recruitment of Local Defence Unit [LDU] Forces across the country.
Army spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire said by 9am, the numbers had swelled in the thousands, above the required numbers.
The recruitment centres were; Gulu Pele stadium, Lyantonde District Headquarters, Kaabong District Headquarters, Lamwo District Headquarters and Wankulukuku Stadium for Lubaga Residents in Kampala.
On Tuesday, recruitment took place in Kotido, Kitgum, Amuru, Kyotera as well as Old Kampala SS in Kampala.
Karemire said the big turn up demonstrates the commitment and trust people have in the country’s security architecture that supports the UPDF doctrine of a small, professional, well-equipped army backed by a large reserve force.
He said the LDUs will be a strong base to sustain peace and security of persons and their property.
He warned the public to guard against unscrupulous persons who will take the advantage to solicit bribes with a promise of facilitating recruitment.
He said if such persons are caught, they will roundly face the strong hand of the law.
