Krispus Ayena Odongo has been sent to Lira Central Prison over failure to pay Shs146m to Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo.
Ayena is the lead counsel for former Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander, Dominic Ongwen, who is currently facing war crimes trial at The Hague-based International Criminal Court.
He was arrested on Thursday by agents of Spearlink Auctioneers and Court Bailiffs and appeared before the Assistant Registrar of the High Court in Lira, Jeneva Natukunda, on Friday.
Ayena, the former Oyam North Member of Parliament lost the 2016 parliamentary election petition and was expected to pay his rival the costs of the suit.
High Court in 2016 nullified Engola’s election as Oyam North MP citing variations in his academic papers.
Also the state minister for Defence, Engola appealed against the decision of the High Court.
The appeal court overturned the decision of the High Court, upheld Engola’s election and ordered Ayena to pay Shs146m as costs incurred by the minister.
Ayena did not pay the money hence his arrest and consequent imprisonment.
