Authorities in Kigali including ministers and high ranking police officers have intervened and apprehended individuals behind the “Wealth Fitness” scheme which this morning defrauded thousands in Rwanda’s capital Kigali with a promise of financial empowerment.

Those who turned up paid Rwf5,000 to attend the workshop with the hope of getting a $197 ‘bonus’ later.

According to witnesses, over 20,000 people turned up at Kigali Convention Centre on Tuesday morning, with the hope of getting the cash bonus.

An email seen by edge.ug indicates that “all attendees who stay for the entire event will receive a $197 VALUE BONUS” which many thought is cash.

The participants turned up in large numbers

Some of the people who talked to this reporter said they had borrowed money for transport with the hope of getting $197 in the evening.

They had not been told about the Rwf5,000 which was paid at the venue.

However, organisers were overwhelmed by the numbers, leading to chaotic scenes which led to intervention of authorities.

Government and Rwanda National Police officials led by Rwanda National Police Commissioner of Operations CP George Rumanzi, RPC Central region ACP Felix Rutagerura Bahizi and Peter Karake, the DG for Crime Intelligence & Counter Terrorism and Rwanda Investigation Bureau stepped in to calm the situation and urged the attendees to leave the venue.

Victims cry out

The event organisers vanished without refunding those who paid the amount, leading to mini-protests by those who suspected that they had been defrauded.

Attendees said that they were left hanging with no one informing them on what next after paying the amount.

RIB says investigations are ongoing to determine what went wrong and who is behind the saga.

This development comes a few weeks after authorities in Kigali apprehended two individual after they defrauded thousands of millions of francs.
