A heavy fire has broken out in Rukungiri town, Western Uganda, ravaging businesses along along Kinyasano Road in Rwakabengo A in southern division with gas cylinders exploding inside people’s homes.
Witnesses told edge.ug that the fire started in a milling factory below Umeme power station and then caught welding workshops destroying property worth millions.
According to Moses Nanoka, Rukungiri District Police Commander, one person was burnt to death.
He identified the victim as one Niwagaba who killed after one of the gas cylinders exploded and hit him.
Witnesses also told edge.ug that the police fire brigade came to the scene without water and watched as Mulera’s mailing factory, welding businesses, and people’s homes were turned to ashes.
Among the property that were burnt include four wielding machines President Museveni donated to a group of youth under their umbrella body Rukungiri Municipality Welders Association (RMWA) in 2018.
According to RMWA chairperson, Julius Kamusiime, they used the equipment for painting, joinery and welding.
