Joseph Atukunda, who describes himself as a mental health champion, has Sunday afternoon announced plans to end his life.
Atukunda is the founder and President at Heartsounds Uganda, a mental health service user-led community- based organisation.
It was founded in 2008 to provide peer support and raise awareness on mental health, advocate for people with psycho-social and mental disability and reduces community stigma and discrimination as well as empower people who suffer from mental illness.
The organisation with 107 registered mental health service users is registered with Kampala Capital City Authority with a pilot resource centre located at Nsambya Kampala.
“I have been exorcized and abandoned by my family. I thank them for being patient up to this time but suicide is inevitable,” Atukunda announced in a Facebook post.
“My official cultural heir is Godfrey Namurebire Biryomumeisho my 1st born, co-heired by Jordan Atukunzire my last born. My heir in charge of finances is Atwine James Kahigiriza and my heir in Charge of mental health and foreign affairs is Joshua Kahigiriza,” he said in a temporary will.
Atukunda made it clear that he has not divided his property, and leaves that to his wife Atukunda Harriet…”but note that Godfrey has already got his inheritance and what remains of my estate goes to Harriet’s 4 children”.
“Please remember the 1st will I wrote here of the Rotary 4 way test and attach it to this. CHEERS< MEET IN HEAVEN GUYS!” he signed off.
Atukunda even gave out his password for the Facebook account [Jordan2ah5g5r5zA] saying whoever wants it can take it.
“And my yahoo account is JKB2ah5g5r5zA and Gmail Victor5A. God be with you till we meet again.”
As an afterthought, he said: “Forgot to mention my heir in charge of PEACE AND LOVE Jennifar Atuhaire Tayebwa.”
Atukunda was planning on running for Mayor Mbarara City in 2021-2026 representing the peoples’ power.
He is a Board Member and Vice President for Africa Region at World Federation for Mental Health and Founder.
He studied at Nkumba College of Commerce, is a former Coordinator at International Medical Corps and former Coordinator at Heartsounds Uganda.
He studied Higher Diploma in Accountancy at Nkumba College of Commerce, went to Kings College Budo and lives in Mbarara, Western Uganda.
