President Museveni kept and fulfilled his promise to a Teso based blind singer General Lazaro Okwakol on his 50th birthday.
This was confirmed by Captain Mike Mukula, the National Vice Chairman NRM Eastern region.
“H.E The President has fulfilled his pledge to support Teso renowned blind artist to help him buy music equipment by contributing 30 million shillings and wishing him a happy 50th Birthday,” Mukula said.
The born-blind singer celebrated his golden jubilee on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Liquid Gardens in Kumi town.
Several artists from Teso region including; Mighty Bony King, Naffz Cee, Dozing Giant, Comedian Dolopiko, among others, attended the event.
Gen Okwakol was born in 1969 in Adami village, Mukongoro Kumi district.
The blind musician started singing at the age of 10, according to his caretaker Okalany Sophie.
Okalany told Teso Vibez, a local entertainment website that she met Lazaro in 1986 when he was already disabled.
His music gift was manifested by the way he played a thumb piano commonly known as ‘akogo’.
Okalany took him to Soroti town when he learnt to play a guitar and started singing in churches.
He has no formal education but acquired the English language by interacting with educated people.
Among those he has interacted with is former first female Vice Presidnet Dr. Wandira Kazibwe who always gave him money whenever she visited Kumi town.
