UPDATE: Opposition figure Kizza Besigye has been arrested in Mubende town and driven off to an unknown destination.
“Besigye has been kidnapped Mubende town amid hail of bullets and teargas,” said his aide, Ronald Muhinda.
Police has raided Mubende FM, a radio located in Mubende town and attempted to arrest opposition figure Kizza Besigye who was being hosted in its studios.
“After 10 minutes on air, via 106 Mubende Fm Radio, the Station was surrounded by heavily armed police officers and switched off from the mast!” Besigye tweeted.
He added: “This is a repeat of what happened in Kabale and Jinja. In Mbarara, we couldn’t even get to the radio. We are still inside.”
His aide, Ronald Muhinda, said police banged the doors to Mubende FM and arrested Besigye.
Police broke the biometric keyless door system to access Mubende FM studios.
The truck parked outside the radio. People then surrounded the radio and closed the gate from outside leaving police stuck inside.
Police was led by Mubende DPC Martin Okoyo.
Besigye had managed to reach Mubende evading several police road blocks mounted on Kampala-Mubende road.
Muhinda said about 50 military officers were deployed to patrol Mubende town ahead of Besigye’s visit to the area.
When Besigye got out of the radio, people surrounded Prime Building where the radio is located blocking police from getting out prompting the officers to resort to force.
