Julius Kateregga, a second year student of Bachelor of Arts with Education, who stood under the People Power banner has been elected the new Makerere University Guild President.
Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe was the first to congratulate Kateregga upon being elected the 85th Guild President of Makerere University.
“I look forward to working with you to make Makerere greater,” Nawangwe said.
Kateregga polled 3,912 votes followed by another People Power candidate and closest rival, Joshua Mukisa, a 3rd year law student who gathered 3,365 votes and then the ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM] candidate Julian Taliwaku who came in third place with 1,465 votes.
Milly Namuddu, a second-year Bachelor of Education (Arts) student, is running under the flag of Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] came in fourth place with 1, 298 votes.
George Mutumba popularly known as O-M-G, a second-year student of Development Studies got 866 votes, People Power’s David Musiri, a second year student of Bachelor of Commerce got 637 votes, Winter Nsimire Muhangi, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering got 81 votes, NRM’s Arinda Osbert got 55 votes and lastly Umaru Wageya, a second-year student of Bachelor of Economics got 44 votes.
There was low turn of voters because of heavy deployment while others said that they are disappointed with the previous guild.
According to the students, the previous guild passed the 15% tuition policy something which angered many.
Voting kicked off at 9am across the whole university amidst heavy deployment.
