Strive Masiyiwa, a London-based Zimbabwean businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, wants Speke Resort and Commonwealth hotel in Munyonyo declared the official Africa Conference Centre.
Strive, the founder and executive chairman of diversified international Telecommunications, Media and Technology group Econet Wireless, was speaking at the “Africa Now” summit held at Munyonyo from Tuesday.
The summit was aimed at transforming and generating opportunities for youth employment, the continent’s potential development strategies and harnessing global goals.
Strive used the opportunity to call upon the Ugandan government to declare the posh hotel as the official Africa’s conference and convention centre.
Speke Resort and Commonwealth village Munyonyo is a subsidiary of Ruparelia group.
While delivering his keynote address in the presence of five heads of state that attended the ‘Africa now’ summit co-chaired by President Museveni, Strive said he had never been to a more perfect venue.
“Why don’t we declare this venue, this site the official African conference centre?” he asked.
“I have never…,” he was interrupted by cheers and handclaps from the audience.
“I go all-over Africa for conferences and in big hotels and we go to the basements.”
He added: “Now we come to this amazing venue. Thank you very much for organising. I will come every year,” he said while president Museveni looked on in amazement.
