Police has blocked Democratic Party [DP] reunion at Jinja Rugby Grounds and arrested party president Norbert Mao.
When Mao arrived in Jinja town at 8am, he found a heavy police deployment at the venue.
He was grabbed and rushed to Jinja Central Police Station.
“Sad day for democracy! The police has blocked the #DPREUNION in Jinja today. Heavy deployment awaited at 8am at the Jinja Rugby Grounds,” Mao said in a tweet.
He added: “When I protested the illegality of their actions and demanded to see the RPC I was simply bundled into a saloon car and taken to CPS.”
Police deploy heavily on the streets of Jinja Town Wednesday morning ahead of the Busoga DP-UYD reunion.
Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine is among opposition figures expected to grace the function.
“We have fully complied with the requirements of the law. The whole of Busoga plus Buikwe and Buvuma is mobilised for this historic meeting,” Mao said while announcing the reunion on Tuesday.
His weekly press conference was preceded by a warm reception of a delegation from our partners in the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party.
The Party leadership led by the President Hon. Norbert Mao, National Treasury Hon. Mary Babirye Kabandaand National Organising Secretary Sulaiman Sserwadda Kidandala discussed a catalogue of issues with them including the possibilities of forming an alliance to defeat Kaguta Museveni in the next general elections.
