The Anti-Corruption Court has issued criminal summons for Kawempe South Member of Parliament Hon Mubarak Munyagwa over Shs100m bribe he allegedly solicited while still serving as the Mayor Kawempe Division.
Munyagwa is the new chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase) having replaced Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu.
According to state prosecutor, Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, Munyagwa was expected in the Kololo based court on Thursday but he didn’t come neither did his lawyer.
Munyagwa is being represented by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who came late.
Prosecution alleges that in December 2014 at Haks Investment Limited, Munyagwa who was a mayor of Kawempe Division solicited for a gratification of Shs100m from Francis Kakumba.
The bribe was for him to exert improper influence over Kawempe Division Urban Council to nominate Muyanja Isaac (S/O Francis Kavuma) for appointment as a member of Kampala City Land Board representing Kawempe Division.
Prosecution further alleges that Munyagwa, in the same year, received a gratification of $20,000 [Shs73m] from Kakumba in exchange for him to exert improper influence over Kawempe Division Urban Council to nominate Isaac Muyanja (S/O Kakumba).
In the same year, Munyagwa also received a gratification of Shs4m from Kakumba in exchange for him to exert improper influence over the Kawempe Division Urban Council to nominate Muyanja (S/O Kakumba) for appointment as a member of Kampala City Land Board representing Kawempe Division.
Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Pamella Lamunu extended Munyagwa’s criminal summons to March 6, 2019.
The legislator who now faces corruption charges is still expected to appear for plea taking.
