The Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday launched “Miss Curvy Uganda”, a contest for curvy and sexy Ugandan women who will now become tourist attraction assets.

The contest was unveiled by State minister for Tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda at Mestil Hotel in Kampala.

The finalists will be selected in June. Kiwanda calls it a strategy to promote the tourism industry saying the country is naturally endowed with nice looking women.

He sampled beauty queens who moved around Mestil Hotel pool side, leaving onlookers awed.

Among them was television and radio personality Anita Fabiola.

On top of the diverse wildlife species such as gorillas, birds, animals, River Nile, crater lakes and mountains, tourists will now look at sexy Ugandan women.

Ann Mungoma, the lead organiser for the beauty pageant, says “Miss Curvy” will bring out the endowment of the real African woman.

“It is an exceptional event that will see young ladies showcase their beautiful curves and intellect,” she said, explaining that only those aged 18 and below 35 are eligible to participate.

Sex objects?

Meanwhile, a Ugandan woman has started a petition to have the Miss Curvy Uganda contest cancelled.

Primrose Murungi, in her petition, says the contest is demeaning to women as it objectifies their bodies as sex objects.

“I personally feel attacked. This is degrading of women,” she said.

“In a country where women are grabbed by men while walking on the streets and now they have legalized it by making them tourist attractions is not fair.

Primrose demands that the contest is taken down and that Minister Kiwanda offers a public apology for coming up with such an initiative.

“They are objectifying us and reducing women to nothing. Please sign this petition for ministry of tourism to take down the miss curvy challenge and offer an apology to the public as well.”
