AMISOM this week awarded medals to the outgoing Force Commander Lt. Gen. Jim Beesigye Owoyesigire and two other senior officers for their distinguished service to the African Union Mission in Somalia.
Lt. Gen. Owoyesigire, who handed over office to Lt. Gen. Tigabu, was decorated alongside Maj. Gen. Tai Gituai, the Deputy Force Commander in-charge of Operations & Plans and Col. Naboth Mwesigwa, the Chief Military Intelligence Officer, both concluding their one-year tour of duty.
The senior military officers were decorated by the AMISOM Head of Mission, Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Amb Francisco Madeira.
Lt. Gen. Beesigye, who has served in that capacity since January 2018 was described as an “extraordinary officer”.
Meanwhile, a third group, of 38 police officers, from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia under AMISOM concluded their tour of duty.
The officers contributed to Somalia’s Transition Plan, training, mentoring and preparing their Somali counterparts to take over from them.
