Idrisa Kaweesa, the father of self-proclaimed king of Ankole kingdom, Umar Asiimwe, spent the weekend in cells at Mbarara Police Station.

Samson Kasasira, the Police spokesperson for Rwizi region, told the state-run New Vision that the arrest came after he refused to produce some of his children who beat up Asiimwe.

The incident happened on December 31, 2018 where Asiimwe his son, lost his eye after being beaten by relatives for allegedly not sharing the money he got from President Museveni.

He was hospitalised at Mayanja Memorial hospital in Mbarara town.

Kaweesa and one of his sons Salim Tugume were picked by policemen on Friday evening and detained at Mbarara Police Station.

The family, according to police, is fighting over the ownership of Itaaba land.

Kaweesa had earlier banished his son Asiimwe from accessing the land, saying he had disowned him.

But Asiimwe’s spokesperson, Polly Muyambi, says the land belongs to Ankole Karo Kalungi, an institution that was registered by Umar Asiimwe when he enthroned himself.

However, records show the land was bought by Kaweesa at Shs3m.
