Prof Bakuneta in the dock during the hearing of his case

Court on Tuesday set free Makerere University lecturer Prof Christopher Bakuneta who has been on trial for raping a student.

Bakuneta, a lecturer at Makerere University College of Natural Sciences, was indicted for raping one Vanessa Ntegesa who was staying in his garage.

Prosecutions alleged that on March, 27, 2016, at Makerere University in Kawempe Division, Kampala city, Bakuneta had forceful sexual intercourse with the student without her consent.

He was charged with rape and remanded to Luzira prison. However, a key witness in his case failed to appear in court after several summons.

Tuesday was the second time the complainant herself failed to show up.

This prompted the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to withdraw the charges through a State attorney who presented a nolle-prosequi discontinuing the charge.

High Court Judge Jane Francis Abodo therefore ordered the release of the professor.
