American R&B foremost star Elgin Baylor Lumpkin aka Ginuwine on Saturday night paid a glowing tribute fallen music legends Michael Jackson [MJ] and Aaliyah, saying he is what he is today because of them.

Ginuwine who was performing at the Johnnie Walker Soul Safari concert held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

But he started by stealing hearts of Ugandan ladies who screamed and kept asking him for more as he did his old songs nearly lulling the trees to sleep.

The stage was set by local acts, Kenneth Mugabi, Naava Grey, Aziz Azion and Tonya Ahenda and Maurice Kirya who opened for the R&B legend.

Ginuwine who stepped on the stage sometime after 10pm, was introduced by Jazz Safari founder Tshaka Mayanja.

The 48-year-old sampled tracks like Differences, Pony, Same Ol’ G, In Those Jeans, among others.

After charming soul music lovers, Ginuwine went down the stage, gave fans photo ops and asked them to sing with him.

Holding a flower, he then called upon his team to pick a lady from the audience, compose a song and sing it to her there and then.

The development drove the ladies with wild excitement. Ginuwine spiced up the act by showering them with red roses.

He took off some time to sing Aaliyah’s “I Miss You” and do MJ “moon-walking” slides on stage accompanied by the pop icon’s songs.

Michael Jackson aka MJ

Ginuwine who began his career as a member of Swing Mob, a New York-based record label says he was lucky enough to meet rapper Melissa “Missy” Elliott, singer-songwriter Stephen “Static Major” Garrett and producer Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley, who became his main collaborators through the 1990s.

But ultimately, Ginuwine was heavily influenced by Michael Jackson. On his second album, ‘100% Ginuwine,’ the crooner paid homage to his idol by covering ‘She’s Out of My Life.’

Ginuwine stays close to the original version as possible, even going so far as to mimic Michael’s sniffling on the track.

The only difference is the crescendo at the end with its orchestral strings. This is a good faithful rendition of MJ’s tear-jerking ballad.

Dubbed the “King of Pop”, MJ is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century and is also regarded as one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

The American singer-songwriter succumbed to a Cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009.

Aaliyah

In 1999, Ginuwine featured Aaliyah in an R&B song titled “Final Warning” off his album “100% Ginuwine”.

She was rumoured to have relationships with Jay-Z and Ginuwine, both of which she denied. Rumours claimed Aaliyah and Ginuwine dated from 1997 to 1998.

She has been credited for helping redefine contemporary R&B, pop and hip hop, earning her the nicknames “Princess of R&B” and “Queen of Urban Pop”.

She is listed by Billboard as the tenth most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years, and the 27th most successful R&B artist in history.

The jazzy version, the Johnnie Walker Jazz Safari, was held in June this year, headlined by the Grammy Award winner Richard Bona.

The R&B/soul edition known as the Johnnie Walker Soul Safari debuted on the Ugandan social calendar Saturday, December 1.
