Uganda Peoples Defence Forces [UPDF] has deployed soldiers in Kampala city and increased its patrols across the city suburbs.
Heavily armed soldiers are currently patrolling streets on foot, mounting check-points and carrying out searches and arrests.
The soldiers were seen in Najjera, Nansana, Kasubi, Kireka and Namugongo thought to be infested with criminals.
According to army spokesperson, Brig Richard Karemire, the deployments are part of President Museveni’s strategic measures to fight crime in urban areas.
Museveni made the resolution after the assassination of Assistant Superintendent of Police Muhammad Kirumira in September.
He ordered the recruitment of 24,000 Local Defence Unit personnel to patrol Kampala Metropolitan area and Wakiso district.
