Uganda will host the 9th high level meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Region on 8th October, 2018 at the Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo.
This was announced Tuesday by ICT minister Hon Frank Tumwebaze while addressing members of the press about following a seating Monday at State House Entebbe chaired by President Museveni.
The meeting is aimed at maintaining Museveni’s strong leadership in dealing with issues of regional peace and security and commit to the neutralisation of negative forces and restoration of peace, security and stability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the region.
Such elements include the Allied Democratic Forces [ADF], a rebel group in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is considered a terrorist organisation by the Ugandan government.
It was originally based in western Uganda but has expanded into the neighbouring DRC.
Last year, UPDF launched heavy artillery attacks on ADF bases killing over 100 insurgents.
The meeting will also facilitate economic activities and trade to flourish between Uganda and Congo.
It will help mobilise the region and the international community in the supporting efforts to stabilise eastern DRC and the region and to contribute to regional and internal peace and security.
