The offices of Twerwaneho Listener’s Club (TLC), an non-governmental organisation [NGO] operating in the Crater Lakes communities in Tooro was broken into on Monday night.
Chapter Four Uganda, a watchdog providing robust and strategic legal response to abuse of Civil Liberties in defence of Human Rights for all, said it is the third attack in a month.
The home of the executive director was also attacked. Police has visited the two scenes.
The NGO last shared a photo of community members from Kijura Town Council and Hakibale Sub County at TLC offices posing after attending the court proceedings against Uganda Wildlife Authority [UWA] for unlawful evictions of people from their land.
The hearing was adjourned to 26th October, 2018.
CIVICUS Monitor, a Global platform dedicated to tracking civics pace said harassment of Twerwaneho Listener’s Club (TLC) continues with yet another break-in at their offices.
Over a year ago, TLC’s coordinator Irumba Erasmus was killed to prevent him revealing information about corruption.
“Authorities in Uganda should immediately stop this persecution,” the rights body insisted.
Twerwaneho Listeners Club (TLC) is a non-governmental organisation based in Fort Portal, in the Rwenzori Region of Western Uganda.
TLC carries out human rights advocacy in various ways including weekly radio programs centred on human rights education, capacity building to enhance human rights defenders’ ability to defend and promote human rights in the region, civic education, the monitoring and documentation of human rights violations and the challenging of unlawful government actions in court.
Since 2006, it has been working on unlawful evictions from public community land.
TLC radio programmes generally focus on human rights issues with a view to holding public leaders more accountable.
The attack on the organisation’s offices comes shortly after Jackie Wolfson of the Shule Foundation was arrested and deported by the Ugandan authorities via a KLM flight out of Entebbe at 11.45pm on Sunday.
She is accused of using her NGO to fund Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine and his people power.
Last month, assailants attacked Isis-WICCE offices in Minister’s Village, Ntinda and stole computer hard drives containing the organisation’s information.
