Former Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, is reportedly angry at social media claims that he has a hand in the assassination of maverick police officer, Muhammad Kirumira.

Kayihura who skipped Court Martial appearance is currently in the Kenyan capital Nairobi where he is receiving treatment following several months in detention at Makindye military barracks.

According to The East African, on Monday, Gen Kayihura’s lawyers made a plea to the General Court Martial head to grant him permission to travel to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

The embattled army general had appeared before a seven-man military court chaired by Lt. Gen Andrew Gutti after close to 70 days in detention.

Gen Kayihura was charged with aiding and abetting the kidnapping by commission, repatriating Rwandan exile and refugees and Ugandan citizens to Rwanda between 2012 and 2016.

He was also accused of failing to protect war material by issuing arms to unauthorised persons including Boda Boda 2010 members led by jailed Abdallah Kitatta between 2010 and 2018.

He was subsequently granted bail on August 28, basing on his old age and most importantly, his poor health.

Kayihura’s lawyers confirmed to reporters that his client would be in court on October 1.

Family members told a local news website Chimpreports that Kayihura is undergoing medical tests at Nairobi Hospital.

He is escorted by the Chief of UPDF Medical Services, Brigadier Dr Ambrose Musinguzi.

The family member told Chimpreports that Kayihura who has no phone in hospital was unaware of death of ASP Muhammad Kirumira.

Ugandans have been on social media demanding the re-arrest of Gen Kayihura, saying assassinations resumed after his release.

Kirumira had said that with Kayihura in prison, murders would cease in the country. When Kayihura got bail, Kirumira was the first to go.

“His family is furious at accusations against him. They are just disappointed that Ugandans use any opportunity to destroy the good man they know. There is nothing worse than being accused of murder when you are completely innocent just as he was in the murder of Kaweesi,” a relative is quoted to have said.

President Museveni has since thrown out a report by Internal Security Organisation [ISO] which mired Kayihura in the murder of former police spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
