30 wounded in Karuma dam accident

Karuma Dam

Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited [UEGCL] says 30 of its staff have been injured following an accident in an underground access duct of Karuma Hydropower Dam.

Simon Kasyate, the spokesman of UEGCL said in a press release that the incident happened on Thursday at around 7pm.

A truck that was transporting night shift construction workers failed to brake, hit a wall and overturned inside the tunnel.

Kasyate said the accident was not a result of structural collapse; it was a motor accident.

He said the injured workers were evacuated to Lacor Hospital and Gulu Independent Hospital for medical attention.

“The accident was regrettable. Thankfully, nobody died in the accident. Everything is being done to support the injured who are currently in hospital,” he said.

The $1.7bn project funded by Exim Bank of China and the government of Uganda has been construction since December, 2013 by Sinohydro, a Chinese firm.
