Police has confirmed one person died and six others were admitted after the force engaged supporters of Mityana municipality MP Francis Zaake.
Police used live bullets, tear gas and curbs to disperse rowdy residents who were demonstrating against the medical condition of their legislator.
They burnt car tyres and blocked access to all major roads, including the Kampala-Mityana-Mubende highway paralyzing traffic flow.
Scores of youth were arrested in the ensuing running battles with police.
“Our officers at Mityana hospital have confirmed that the six patients admitted there as a result of the morning violent riots, one Mr. Samuel Ssekiziyivu a resident of Myanzi, Kasanda District has breathed his last,” said SSP Emilian Kayima, the police spokesperson.
He added: “It is regrettable and sad. The other five, one Mr. Ssengooba Derrick has been discharged.”
He said the four are still undergoing medical attention and these are: Messors; Muwonge Reagan, David Asiimwe, Jingo Lawrence and Ms. Jalia Nakiryowa. The process to apprehend the officer who shot is on.
“Again, members of the public are asked to desist from violent confrontation that often result in regrettable incidents. Our sympathies go the family of the deceased and we wish the victims quick recovery.”
