A school teacher ordered students to beat and kill journalist covering a school fire break out at St. Augustine’ College Kayunga in Wakiso district.
William Mutyaba of Bukedde TV was beaten on Monday 23 July, 2018 at about 9pm when he was covering a fire that had gutted one of the school dormitories.
Mutyaba told HRNJ-Uganda that the teacher, a one Akena odered the students to kill him, “you students come beat and kill this man, he is the Bukedde journalist, he even covered the fire last time, you beat him, kill him…”
Mutyaba says as he tried to run away with his camera, the security guard locked the gate, so the students beat him up in a scuffle that lasted about an hour.
He was rescued by another security guard warning that the students were about to kill the man.
Human Rights Network for Journalists Uganda [HRNJ-Uganda] team of three lawyers and the Executive Director visited Wakiso police station to follow up a case of assault which was filed by the victim journalist almost a week ago.
The police at the station seems to be deliberately ignoring the matter since no action has been taken to bring the culprits to book.
They have since dodged talking to the journalist about the progress of his file, not even witness statements have been recorded.
This journalist deserves justices as he battles with medical treatment due to the grievance bodily harm occasioned to him during the beating.
He has severe chest pain, bruised eye and other injuries.
“We shall ensure that these perpetrators are brought to book,” said Robert Ssempala, the HRNJ-U coordinator.
