UCC bans airtime cards to force Ugandans pay mobile money tax

Uganda communications commission (UCC) has banned the use of airtime cards better known as scratch cards.

On Wednesday MPs pushed the suspension of Social Media, Mobile Money Tax saying government was simply robbing the citizens.

This demand followed a statement by Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda that the government was expediting a review of the taxes with a view of presenting to parliament an amendment by Thursday, next week.

In a notice, UCC says clients can now load airtime through mobile money, Africell money and airtel money.

According to the notice, this will take effect by July 31, 2018.

Yesterday, Kyadondo East MP Bobi Wine led a demonstration against this same tax in Kampala.

President Museveni said he has since reduced the tax to 0.5%.
