Police in Rukungiri has confirmed an arrest and detention of ten opposition individuals on different charges related to election malpractices.
These reasons include ballot stuffing, bribing voters, defacement of posters and inciting violence among others.
Those netted in action include Hon Vincent Kyamadidi and former Rukungiri LCV Chairman Rutaro Athanasias.
Kigezi sub region police spokesperson I.P Maate Elly has confirmed the arrests when contacted at CPS in Rukungiri Municipality this afternoon.
Maate identified the others as Tuhairwe Peter, Namanya Paul, Mugisha Nicholas, Baguma Stephen, Matagari Henry and Zidda Tuhairwe.
All the eight are in police custody outside Rukungiri district.
The opposition is reported to be engaged in several rigging practices and intimidation of the NRM supporters across the district.
“We however call upon our party supporters to remain calm but continue reporting any incidents violating the electoral laws to police and other relevant authorities,” said Rogers Mulindwa, the NRM Communications Officer.
In a statement, police said it had arrested a total of ten (10) suspects in connection to Rukungiri elections.
The suspects are charged with various offences including voter bribery, inciting violence and failure to follow procedure on issuance of ballot papers.
It said the electoral process so far is still peaceful.
