Medical interns chose Labour Day to announce the renewal of a countrywide strike until government clears their allowances.
The interns who include doctors, nurses, pharmacists and dentists are demanding arrears for the months of March and April.
“We have laid down our tools as we await government response towards our plight,” said Dr Robert Lubega, the interns’ President of the 2017/2018 group.
He cited the case of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in Eastern Uganda where interns have not been paid allowances since December last year.
Addressing press at Mulago Galloway Hostel on Tuesday, Dr Lubega said some interns have been evicted from their houses.
He explained that only sites like Mbarara, Jinja, Masaka regional referral hospitals as well as Entebbe and Kagando General Hospitals have received payment for March.
Last year, the ministry of health pledged to start paying the interns on a monthly basis as opposed to the quarterly as one of the conditions that medical doctors put across to suspend their three-week strike.
