The Inspector General of Police [IGP] Okoth Ochola has finally closed down Nalufenya torture chambers in Jinja district as earlier promised.
The so-called “Special Forces Operation Base” aka Nalufenya was used by police operatives to torture and break limbs of Ugandans.
Daily Monitor quotes a message from Police Headquarters ordering the directorate of Logistics and Engineering to transform Nalufenya back to a police station.
Ochola had earlier told Parliament that he was working on the legal documents to close the dreaded detention centre.
Nalufenya, which was formerly a police station, was established by the former IGP Gen Kale Kayihura to counter the murders of Muslim clerics in eastern Uganda.
The facility was used to detain violent and high profile criminals.
Uganda Human Rights Commission chairman Med Kaggwa visited the facility in 2017 after suspects in the murder of former police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi were tortured beyond recognition.
Both human rights bodies and Members of Parliament recommended that the facility be closed with immediate effect.
