Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party says over 100 of its supporters have been arrested in Jinja ahead of the Thursday by-election.
According to Ingrid Turinawe, the FDC mobilisation secretary, police has arrested over 100 agents of their candidate, Paul Mwiru, who is fighting for the Jinja East MP seat with the ruling NRM candidate, Igeme Nabeta.
Ingrid said the agents were found in Mwiru’s office, rounded up and driven to Nalufenya detention facility.
Police fired teargas and live ammunition while arresting them.
She said Jinja Central Division Chairman Kirunda Mubarak was beaten to a coma and is currently admitted at Nile hospital in Jinja town.
According to FDC campaign coordinator, Chula Philemon, other supporters were arrested at Old Booma grounds where Mwiru was campaigning on Tuesday evening.
Former presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye, and other party bigwigs also campaigned for Mwiru while President Museveni campaigned for Nabeta.
Jinja Regional Police Commander, Gerald Twishima, says FDC supporters were arrested on charges of malicious damage and threatening violence.
