Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze on Thursday demeaned and reduced Kyankwanzi Woman MP Hon Anna Maria Nankabirwa to a mere flower girl.
Nambooze, Hon. Nankabirwa, Police Public Relations Officer, Polly Namaye and Activist Shiela Kawamara were deliberating on the Affirmative Action and Security of Women on NBS “frontline” programme moderated by Mildred Tuhaise.
“This is flower girl politics, the politics you (Hon. Nankabirwa) are doing is that you are a flower girl,” Nambooze lashed out.
She said the only purpose Nankabirwa carries is “to seat there in your dress and be seen. What we are pursuing right now is symbolism”.
Offended and shamed, Nankabirwa protested: “No…No. Hon Nambooze, look at me straight in my eyes and tell me I do flower politics.”
Nambooze rubbed salt in her fresh wounds: “Nankabirwa, honourable, the kind of politics you are in, you are a flower-girl politician.”
Hon. Nambooze said women have come from far and need to celebrate.
“But we still have a long way to go and we are still moving but I want to celebrate all the women. Each generation has been able to add a brick. We have been able to move apart from the past 32 years.”
Nambooze said she was not even troubled by the number of women in security.
Her concern is the quality of services, the rights of the women are the same as the rights of youth, PWDs.
She said the violation of rights of one group is violation of everyone’s rights.
“Even if we have women in positions of power, once we don’t have respect for human rights then it’s no good. The leader of parliament is a woman but that didn’t stop women guards from breaking my back.”
Namaye on the other hand, said as a woman in security, she is policing in an environment where there is need for policies.
She said the constitution is clear as regards issues of women.
“A woman arrests a woman. And that’s what we try to implement. In a situation where a man arrests a woman, that man is investigated.”
