Hoima man kidnaps self, extorts Shs2m ransom from wife

A man in Hoima is in police custody for faking his own kidnap and extorting money from his wife, friends and family members.

Godfrey Katusiime, 50, a resident of Bwikya Ward in Mparo Division, Hoima Municipality, staged his own kidnap last Thursday.

On Friday, he called his wife saying he had been kidnapped and that kidnappers were demanding Shs2m ransom to release him.

The wife contacted family and friends who raised the money and sent it on his number.

She went ahead and opened a case of kidnap at Hoima Central Police Station.

According to Albertine region police spokesman, Julius Hakiza, police found Katusiime in Butebere Village, Buhanika Sub-county, Hoima District.

He was found with Shs1.5m, which is believed to have been part of the Shs2m that he received as ransom.

He paid the balance of Shs500,000 to the boda boda cyclist who kept transporting him to various locations.
