Police arrests journalists for covering Kirumira trial

Ugly scenes were recorded at Police headquarters in Naguru Thursday morning when the force turned its guns onto members of the fourth estate.

According to journalists on the scene, police is arresting them for covering the trial of former Buyende District Police Commander, Muhammad Kirumira.

Kirumira who has been in detention at Nalufenya detention facility in Jinja is re-appearing at the police court on charges of abuse of office, bribery, misconduct and torture of citizens.

A police officer was photographed racing after a journalist who had just taken a picture of the proceedings.


Another one was captured having cornered and grabbed a journalist like a chicken thief.

Yesterday, MP Safia Nalule (NRM, PWD Central) rapped Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire on torture by government agents.

Nalule said the case of renegade Assistant Superintendent of Police Muhammad Kirumira’s arrest was “rude and should never have happened.”

Otafiire promised to raise the issue of torture before the Minister of Internal Affairs Gen. Jeje Odongo and Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura.
