The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has summoned the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda over the raging refugee scandal in which officials under him are accused of misappropriating funds.

Four Office of the Prime minister [OPM] officials were suspended on allegations of selling off South Sudan refugees and pocketing the funds meant to take care of the homeless in camps.

Once more, OPM officials are accused of exhorting Shs 20,000 from each of the Congolese refugees.

Rugunda is expected next week to give the government’s stance on the matter.

Museveni enraged

President Museveni said those who misused millions of dollars and other resources meant for refugees by creating ghost refugees are headed to Luzira prisons.

United Nation High Commission for Refugees report cited embezzlement, fraud, sexual abuse and other gross violations by Ugandan officials running refugee camps.

Museveni told journalists on Wednesday that those stealing refugee money will go to jail.

“Luzira is waiting for them,” Museveni said during a press conference at the Kawumu demonstration farm in Luweero district.

Museveni said God will punish those who steal from the unprivileged like the refugees.

“I was a refugee in Tanzania for eight years and now I am a useful citizen. We should handle the refugees well not only for compassion but as a policy to increase our friends.”
