On Tuesday, police briefly detained Assistant Commissioner of Police [ASP] Siragi Bakaleke in an investigation concerning the conning of Korean investors.
Police Flying Squad Unit was investigating Katwe Police Stations officers in the illegal deportation of Korean nationals identified Park Seunghoon and Jang Shingu Un who were residing at Entebbe Mall apartments.
Bakaleke, the Kampala South Regional police commander, ASP Munezero, the Officer in charge Crime Intelligence Katwe police station, ASP George Kayongo, PC Kenneth Zirintusa an operative and Patrick Ochen, all operatives were involved in the saga.
Bakeleke was briefly detained at Railway Police Station while his accomplices were rushed to Nalufenya detention facility in Jinja district.
RPC Bakaleke is accused of obtaining $400,000 [about SHs1.4bn] from the Korean investors with the help of city lawyer Wanyoto at the start of this month.
The Koreans had sought Wanyoto’s legal services at Acacia Avenue.
Wanyoto tipped Bakeleke who brought officers and put the foreigners on gunpoint, forcing them to sign off their money which was withdrawn from Barclays bank.
The Koreans were then taken to Katwe police station where they spent a night.
Bakeleke then decided to deport them the next day but they missed an Emirate plane back home.
The Koreans begged to be allowed go to Diamond Trust Bank to get some money for processing an airline ticket with RwandaAir.
That is when Special Forces deployed at the airport got suspicious and called State House which alerted Police Flying Squad Unit.
One of Bakeleke’s accomplices was arrested at the airport. Three others were picked from Kampala and rushed to Nalufenya.
Bakeleke himself was picked in the afternoon and made to record a statement at Police Professional Standards Unit in Naguru.
The group will be charged with abuse of office, misconduct, theft and illegal deportation of people.
