Serene Suites hotel boss summoned over racist advert

The Chairperson Equal Opportunities Commission, Ms. Sylvia Muwebwa Ntambi, has summoned the management of Serene Suites and Hotel based in Mutundwe, Rubaga division Kampala for running a racist advert.

The hotel advertised in New Vision newspaper on Monday saying it was looking for a hotel manager “preferably White Person” and a restaurant manager “preferably Indian Person”.

The rest of the “insignificant” jobs were left open to Ugandans; that is waitresses, pool attendant, cleaners, gardeners etc.

Ntambi will speak to the Media about Discrimination in Recruitment/Employment today 13/2/18 at Uganda Media Centre at 2:00pm.

In a February 12, 2018 letter addressed to the manager and proprietor of the hotel, Mujuni Lawrence, the secretary to the commission, quoted Article 21 of the constitution which prohibits discrimination on basis of race, colour and ethnic origin.

“The commission therefore found your advert discriminatory and an affront to the concept of equal opportunities,” reads the letter.

The commission demanded for an explanation before Thursday February 15, 2018.

It further ordered the hotel to cease recruitment until the issue has been settled.

Serene Suites is owned by businesswoman, Esther Ampumuza, a member of Kwagalana group.
