Opposition MPs lodging a suit at constitutional court

Opposition Members of Parliament have filed a petition in the Constitutional Court challenging the age limit law and how the bill was passed.

Led by the Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza, the group includes; Hon Mubarak Munyagwa, Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda and Hon Odur Jonathan.

They are represented by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

Lukwago represented the same opposition MPs recently in a case they filed in High Court against Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga for kicking them out of the house.

Justice Margaret Oumo Oguli pushed the matter to the Constitutional Court for lack of jurisdiction to handle it.

The MPs have now filed another case in the Constitutional Court challenging the way this age limit bill was passed.

Their lawyer Lukwago claims the age limit act hampers the peaceful transition of power in Uganda.

According to him, NRM government used force to change the constitution hence committing treason.

“All MPs who voted in favour of constitutional amendment committed treason and we have brought it before the attention of court,” Lukwago argues.

Lukwago in his suit, said he will cite all illegalities committed in and outside parliament.

After the bill was passed, opposition launched K’ogikuteko campaign vowing to restore the constitution abrogated by NRM MPs.

The new suit which serves that purpose comes on heels of a law suit filed by Uganda Law Society challenged in Constitutional Court seeking to right the wrongs committed by NRM government.
