Court on Thursday sentenced city butchers to eight months in prison for using unregulated chemicals to preserve meat.
They are; Erias Katumba, Isma Mutebi, Umar Kalyango, Isa Senoga, Baker Mulondo and Ibrahim Ssekatte.
They were arrested last week from Kalerwe, Ntinda, Nakulabye and Nakasero areas in a joint operation by the KCCA Public Health Directorate, Uganda National Bureau of Statistics, National Drug Authority and Ministry of Agriculture.
According to KCCA health officials, formalin and hydrogen peroxide which the butchers have been using to preserve meat can kill humans if consumed in large quantities.
Beatrice Khainza, the City Hall Grade one magistrate, found them guilty of using the said chemicals, although she found no proof that the chemicals were harmful to people.
She sent them to Luzira prison to serve a sentence of not more than eight months.
